Started in 2001, the Dot NAME domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level names remained working.
